We’ve been inspired by Lean In for quite some time. We inherently understood the complexities of being a successful woman in the workplace—the sacrifices, the trade-offs, the uncertainties. Sometimes, it wasn’t about what we wanted but what we needed to do. In a world where income and economics matter, how can one not work unless born into wealth? And even then, how does one manage that wealth? One of the many tools we used to grasp these nuances was research—reading, educating ourselves, and exploring.
Here is our summary of the Women in the Workplace report, an annual compilation by the prestigious McKinsey & Company and Sheryl Sandberg’s LeanIn.Org.
Key Insights:✨
Women in Leadership: Only about 1 in 4 C-suite leaders are women, with women of color making up just 1 in 16.
Representation Challenges: Women of color experience the most significant decline in representation as they advance from entry-level roles to the C-suite, with their numbers dropping by two-thirds along the way.
Ambitious Young Women: A striking 90% of women aged 30 and under are eager for promotions, with 75% aiming for senior leadership roles.
Women of Color: Even more impressive, 96% of women of color prioritize their careers, and 88% are determined to climb to the next level.
Impact of Microaggressions: Women facing microaggressions often struggle with psychological safety, leading them to mute their voices, code-switch, or hide important aspects of themselves. This stress is profound, making them four times more likely to feel consistently burned out and three times more likely to consider leaving their companies.
Beyond Flexibility: For women, hybrid or remote work offers more than just flexibility. It reduces microaggressions and enhances psychological safety.
Broad Benefits: It’s not just women who benefit from remote work. About 29% of women and 25% of men report fewer unpleasant interactions with coworkers as a major advantage. Additionally, 53% of women and 36% of men appreciate the reduced pressure to manage their personal style or appearance.
Future Success: Half of women and a third of men believe that providing significant flexibility in when and where employees work is a top-three factor for their company’s future success.
